Helping users easily form a new healthy habit

I worked with a team to revise an existing user flow and create a simple, engaging, and memorable user experience.

The Problem

The existing version of the Wim Hof app provided users with a lackluster and unmemorable experience while completing wellness challenges.

The Solution

A prototype was created utilizing a more friendly and accessible UI, along with rewarding engagements which encourage the user to return day after day.

Usability Review

Highlighting the successes and struggles during the cold shower challenge flow.

Business & User frustrations

The current flow is disorganized and impersonal, slowing users down and creating a disconnected user experience.

Primary Frustration

Poor visual hierarchy creates confusion within the product, resulting in navigational and action related issues.

Secondary Frustration

Before starting the challenge timer, users are forced into a settings prompt which results in a clunky user experience.

Competitor Benchmarking

By analyzing both direct and indirect competitors, we identified where Wim Hof was lacking in terms of learnability, efficiency, memorability and satisfaction.

Problem Space

Poor visual hierarchy creates confusion within the product, resulting in navigational and action related issues.

How might we improve the design to create a more intuitive and memorable experience?

Ideation

We brainstormed visually by utilizing the Crazy 8's technique and then structured our ideas using a Mind Map and a Priority Matrix.

What can we add

We can add a sense of personalization and incentives to return and progress in the challenges.

What can we improve

We can improve the UI's accessibility and the user flow.

User Flows

We were able to identify instances in the user flow where activities become redundant by mapping and working through the original cold shower challenge. As a result, we were able to simplify and optimize the flow.

Rapid Prototyping

While sketching our solution, we identified components that needed to be created and utilized throughout our design.

Styles & Components

We created a scalable design system that includes color, type, effect, and icon styles, as well as components such as buttons, cards, and chips.

High Fidelity Prototype

A prototype was created which guides the user through the improved cold shower challenge flow. We designed a much more welcoming and memorable user interface that allows for user personalization as well as motivation for recurring use via the completed challenge badge and streak components.

Usability Testing

A usability testing script was created to collect both qualitative and quantitative data through a test which allowed participants to direct themselves through a cold shower challenge.

Test outcomes

After testing my prototype, I discovered that visual hierarchy not only enhances a user's ability to understand the interface, but it also dramatically boosts the rate at which the user can complete a task. During testing, it was also revealed that due to the instant familiarity, users spent less time idlily interpreting screens and their components.

Three key learnings

1. Utilizing multiple ideation techniques and competitior benchmarking

2. Creating component sets, styles, color palettes and animations

3. Gathering qualititive and quantitive data through UX testing

Next steps

Beyond the cold shower challenge, I intend to expand my prototype by adding more components and user flows for additional challenges. Because of the Wim Hof app's vast range of activities, I could envision many various components that would need to be produced, as well as an expansion of the existing sets. In addition, I would expand the user-focused elements, such as the profile, favorites, and user metrics.
